Here’s how to get rid of shortness of breath
03/03/2022Shortness of breath is something we have all experienced at one time or another. Daily stress and anxiety tend to make this condition worse. Normally, it occurs when you exceed your usual activity level or when you climb to high altitudes where there is less oxygen in the air. However, it can also be caused by anemia, respiratory infection or disease, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and allergies. Some lifestyle modifications, dietary changes and simple home remedies can help manage this health problem. However, if the problem is severe, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Pursed-lip breathing
When you are short of breath, try the pursed-lip breathing technique for quick relief. It will immediately slow down your breathing rate and help you return to a normal state. It also helps relieve stress and anxiety. Sit comfortably and relax your neck and shoulder muscles. Press your lips together in an O shape, inhale through your nose and exhale through your lips. Continue this for at least 10 minutes or until you begin to feel relaxed.
Black coffee
A cup of black coffee can significantly reduce shortness of breath. The caffeine in coffee helps reduce respiratory muscle fatigue and modestly improves airway function. One or two cups of strong black coffee will help regulate your breathing rate. However, don’t drink too much coffee, as it can increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
Ginger
Ginger is great for treating chest or nasal congestion, which could be one of the main causes of shortness of breath. Make yourself a cup of ginger tea: add one tablespoon of freshly cut ginger slices to two cups of boiling water, cover and simmer for 5-10 minutes, strain, add a little honey. Drink two or three cups of this tea a day.
Beet
If anemia is the cause of your shortness of breath, iron deficiency is the root cause. Including beets – which are rich in iron, fiber, calcium, potassium and vitamins – in your diet is a simple solution. Consume a glass of beet, carrot and spinach juice daily for best results.
Bitter Gourd
Bitter gourd is known for its effectiveness in treating asthma, which is a common cause of shortness of breath. Make sure to include plenty of this green vegetable in your diet. Simply make a bitter gourd paste and add a little honey to make it tasty. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, you can add black salt and use it as a spread on your toast.
